An IRS federal tax lien can affect SBA loans, equipment purchases, and invoice factoring because it attaches to business assets and receivables. Lenders and funders decide case by case — bring compliance documents early.
Documents partners often request
- Approved IRS installment agreement and recent payment proof
- CPA letter or tax transcript showing filing compliance when available
- Subordination package if a lender needs priority on new collateral
- Equipment quote and title path for purchase-money financing on a new asset
Illustrative example
Illustrative example — not a quote.
A staffing firm with $14,000 weekly payroll and customers on net-45 terms may need about $98,000 of working capital or receivables financing to cover 7 payroll cycles before customer cash arrives — separate from any IRS lien resolution.

Common questions
- Can you get an SBA loan with a tax lien?
- SBA lenders follow SBA credit policies and often require tax compliance. An open federal tax lien may block approval until you pay, subordinate, or show an approved installment agreement with current payments. SBA lenders decide — LoanHelp is not affiliated with the SBA.
- Can equipment financing work with a tax lien?
- Sometimes, when the new lender takes a purchase-money security interest in the equipment you are buying. That PMSI can have priority on the new asset even if older liens exist on other property — but underwriters still review your full tax and payment history.
- Does invoice factoring work if the IRS filed a lien?
- A federal tax lien can attach to receivables. Factors may decline or require subordination from the IRS. Bring your installment agreement, payment history, and any subordination paperwork to the conversation.
- What is IRS subordination (Form 14134)?
- When a lender needs priority on collateral, the IRS may subordinate its lien if you are in compliance with an installment agreement. IRS Publication 784 describes the process; allow lead time — subordination is not instant.
- Does LoanHelp remove tax liens or approve loans?
- No. LoanHelp is an education and referral service, not a lender or tax advisor. Work with a CPA or tax attorney on lien resolution.
